From May through December, the over-21 set can sing along to 18th-century drinking songs, enjoy stories of the drinking traditions of Colonial times and sample drinks and snacks as they ramble through Historic Philadelphia with a Colonial guide on Tippler’s Tour.

Tipplers stop at local watering holes and, along the way, learn important information, such as Benjamin Franklin’s names for a drunk person (“nimptopsical” and “tipsicum grave”).

Tours embark from the Independence Visitor Center at 6th and Market streets.

The Experience

On Tippler’s Tour, visitors will adventure across the city and learn the history behind Philadelphia’s storied beer-drinking past from a Colonial host.

A fun and interactive experience, the weekly tour takes guests into the heart of Colonial Philadelphia’s pub culture with stops at modern-day watering holes and a Colonial tavern.

Along the way, visitors will indulge in a sip of history while enjoying cider at the Betsy Ross House, drinks and snacks at Victoria Freehouse, National Mechanics, plus the historic City Tavern.

Hear tales about how taverns were used as recruiting stations (getting people inebriated sometimes helped convince them) and how news of the day was discussed in the taverns.
