Chinatown Friendship Gate
The colorful, 40-foot Chinatown Friendship Gate created by artist Sabrina Soong marks the entrance to Philadelphia’s Chinatown neighborhood. The international neighborhood features eclectic shops, neighborhood festivals and events, and a wide selection of delicious Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Thai and Burmese cuisine.
The brightly painted portal follows a traditional Qing Dynasty style, and was created in part with engineers and artisans from China using tiles from Philadelphia’s sister city, Tianjin.
Soong designed the original gate in 1984 and in 2008, the gate underwent an artisan renovation.
The Visit Philly Overnight Package — booked more than 190,000 times since 2001 — comes with free hotel parking (worth up to $100 in Center City Philadelphia), overnight hotel accommodations and choose-your-own-adventure perks.
